Sinclair College - Campus Master Plan and Improvements
Dayton, Ohio, USA
In 1968, an international competition was held to create an aspirational Campus for Sinclair College. Edward Durell Stone and his Partner Peter Capone, were selected to design the new world class Campus with a potential growth of 5,000 Students in mind. Today, the School has outgrown the footprint of the original Campus and now supports over 20,000 Students. While the growth in the student population has been exciting, the size of this Urban Campus has created challenges to the quality of the pedestrian experience, and wayfinding.
College President, Dr. Steven Johnson, worked with Students, Faculty, and the Administration, creating a series of ambitious goals for the School in the coming years. Baker Design Group was selected to work with Peter Capone and Landscape Architects EcoPlan, to Master Plan a series of improvements to enhance the student’s daily experience. The design solutions are inspired by the original Design DNA of the Modern International Style Campus.
This Master Plan locates a new 60,000 sq. ft. Student Services Center in the heart of the Campus, creating a highly visible Front Door to the College. New architectural features and landscape enhancements facilitate wayfinding throughout the Campus. Public roadways passing through the Campus will be narrowed, to become tree lined boulevards with bike paths. The Mayor of Dayton and the Planning Department are excited and supportive of these changes, creating greater synergies between the Campus and the City.
