Harvard Graduate School of Education - Longfellow Hall Renovation & Vertical Expansion
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
LEED Platinum
The Harvard Graduate School of Education sought to renovate and vertically expand one of their most prominent and historic buildings, Longfellow Hall. BDG was selected to design this ambitious 22,000 sq. ft. project which required adding a 5th Floor to create 13,000 sq. ft. of new usable office space. Almost all of the phases of construction were completed with the building occupied. The BDG Team and our consultants, along with Bond Brothers the Construction Managers, worked as a highly collaborative team, to assure that each phase of construction allowed for the building to stay open, operational, and Building Code compliant, for the safety and productivity of the Administration, Faculty and Students.
Originally built in 1929, Longfellow Hall won the Harleston Parker Prize in 1934 for the most beautiful piece of architecture in the Boston region and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. BDG worked with the Cambridge Historical Commission on all aspects of the project to create a vertical addition and other changes that embraced the original historic detailing. The final project achieved a Platinum LEED Certification.
This project included a significantly rebuilt existing roof and complex integration of the added 5th floor envelope, as well as some existing exterior glazing upgrades. All major building systems were replaced and/or upgraded as part of this project and to meet current accessibility code requirements . BDG lead this complex multifaceted project from concept through construction completion and met all client expectations related to budget, schedule, and sustainability.
