Analog Devices - World Headquarters - Parking Garage

Analog Devices (ADI) is built on the idea of being “Ahead of what’s possible.” They are creating the technologies that enable future autonomous driving. They understand the need for parking will reduce in the future, so the idea to build a Parking Garage for almost 700 cars on the campus was viewed as a current necessary evil. Working with BDG, we came to the decision that the parking garage would someday allow for them to remove parking lots and either expand the headquarters or landscape more of the campus. ADI then expressed concerns for the visual impact of having a brutal concrete structure as one of the first impressions upon entering the campus. BDG took their concerns to heart and began designing a parking garage that would become a welcome and handsome addition to their World Headquarters.
ADI’s concern for the garage was so great that approximately $2 million was carried in the budget as “Design Insurance” to apply decorative screens to the exterior of the garage in case they didn’t like the design results. After establishing and addressing all important considerations for the design of the garage, we finished by addressing the exterior. The exterior of the concrete precast was given a deep texture to match the corrugated insulated metal panels of the adjacent office building that BDG designed. We then tinted the concrete to a charcoal color to reduce the reflectivity of the concrete panels. The top of the garage was finished off with a photo voltaic solar collecting roof.
The result was a handsomely understated garage that the ADI stakeholders were pleased to have as an important element on their campus; and we saved $2 million in decorative screens. Over time, the perimeter landscaping will begin to climb the walls of the garage to further integrate the building into the campus landscape.
